Headlights and Loupes (9)
Dental Loupes and Headlights from Orthdent
Loupes and a headlight are the two pieces of equipment that decide how much a clinician can actually see. The loupe magnifies the field; the light makes it visible in a mouth that is in shadow. Used together they reduce eye strain, improve posture and let you work to a finer margin.
- Magnification. 2.5X is the usual starting point - a useful gain in detail with a wide enough field of view. 3.5X shows more detail but with a narrower field, so it suits finer work.
- Working distance. Loupes are made for a set working distance (for example 340 mm, 420 mm or 520 mm). Choosing the distance that matches your normal operating posture is what keeps the image in focus without you leaning in.
- Headband or frame-mounted. Headband loupes fit any user and are easy to share; frame-mounted loupes fix the working distance to your own prescription.
- Optical versus prismatic. Galilean optics are lighter and less expensive; prismatic optics give a wider field and better edge-to-edge clarity at higher magnification.
- Headlight output and filters. A brighter light penetrates deeper and stays cooler on the tissue. Coloured filters let you check composite shades and see the material curing. Cordless lights remove the cable but add battery condition to your routine.
Orthdent supplies dental loupes and LED headlights to clinics, practices, students and laboratories. Browse the listing above for what is currently in stock, and contact us if you need a working distance or magnification that is not shown.
Common questions
What magnification should I start with? 2.5X is the most common starting point. It gives a clear gain in detail without narrowing the field of view too much, and it is easier to adapt to than higher magnification.
How do I choose the working distance? Measure the distance between your eyes and the patient when you sit in your normal operating position, then pick the loupe labelled for that distance. If the image looks soft, or you find yourself leaning in, the working distance does not match your posture.
Do I need a headlight with loupes? It is strongly recommended. Magnification without light shows you a larger but dimmer image - the light is what makes the extra detail usable.
What are the coloured filters for? They block part of the blue light so you can check composite shades and watch the material cure, instead of being dazzled by the curing light.
