Blue Elgiloy Straight Wire — Co-Cr-Ni Arch Wire, 356 mm, 10 per Tube
Blue Elgiloy straight wire from Orthdent is a cobalt-chromium-nickel (Co-Cr-Ni) orthodontic wire supplied as 356 mm (14 inch) straight lengths, ten pieces in one rigid tube, in seven rectangular sections from .016 × .016 to .019 × .025. Blue is the softest of the four Elgiloy tempers — the easiest to bend, form, solder and weld — which is why it is the standard choice for laboratory arch forming, lingual retainers, removable appliance bows, and any case where the wire has to be shaped to the patient instead of taken out of a preformed pack.
Type: cobalt-chromium-nickel alloy, Blue temper, straight lengths, rectangular section, bright mirror-polished. Length: 356 mm / 14 in. Pack: 10 pieces per tube. Sections: 1616, 1622, 1722, 1725, 1822, 1825, 1925.
At a glance
- Alloy: Co-Cr-Ni (Elgiloy type) — roughly 40% cobalt, 20% chromium, 15% nickel, with molybdenum, iron and manganese
- Temper: Blue — softest and most formable of Blue, Yellow, Green and Red
- Form: straight stick, 356 mm / 14 inch, no arch form to cut down
- Section: rectangular, seven sizes, .016×.016 through .019×.025
- Quantity: 10 wires per tube, one tube per order
- Finish: bright mirror polish for smooth sliding and clean soldering
- Universal arch: a straight length has no upper or lower — you bend either arch from the same stick
What “Blue” means in an Elgiloy wire
Cobalt-chromium orthodontic wire is drawn in four tempers, from softest to hardest: Blue, Yellow, Green, Red. The colour names the temper, not the metal — every one of them is the same Co-Cr-Ni alloy, drawn and worked to a different hardness.
Blue sits at the soft end. That gives it three practical advantages in the laboratory and at the chair:
- It bends without fighting back. Tight loops, right-angle bends, stepped arch forms and compound curves all go in with ordinary pliers and far less risk of a kink or a fracture than a harder temper.
- It solders and welds cleanly. Blue is the most weldable of the four tempers; joints can be made at low heat, before the wire embrittles around the joint — which is exactly what you need when you are attaching hooks, loops, springs or retainer pads.
- It can be heat-treated after forming. Once the shape is finished, heat treatment raises the working strength of the wire so a soft, easy-forming stick ends up as a rigid, spring-back appliance.
Because of that combination, Blue is the temper usually recommended for heavier sections (.017×.025 and above) and for any component that has to be hand-formed to an individual case.
Elgiloy is a registered trademark of Elgiloy Specialty Metals. Orthdent supplies a Co-Cr-Ni orthodontic wire of this alloy type in Blue temper; the name is used here descriptively.

Where this wire is used
1. Forming arches in the laboratory. Take one stick and bend the full arch directly on the model. Because it starts straight, there is no preformed arch form to fight — you place the curve where the case needs it, not where the manufacturer put it.
2. Soldering and welding components. Hooks, stops, loops, uprighting springs, auxiliary attachments and retainer pads are soldered or spot-welded straight onto the wire. Blue temper accepts low-heat joints without turning brittle around them.
3. Fixed lingual retainers. A .016 × .022 or .017 × .025 Blue stick is bent along the lingual surfaces of the six anteriors and bonded with composite pads — a stiff, fatigue-resistant retainer that holds the alignment it was fitted to.
4. Removable appliances. Labial bows, Adams clasps, ball clasps, retraction springs and expansion components are all hand-formed from Blue. The soft temper lets a technician build a clasp with the retention and the fit the acrylic base needs.
5. Chairside adjustment and finishing. Where the arch has to be individually contoured — a step, an inset, a bypass, a torqued segment — a straight Blue length can be shaped in the mouth-side pliers and still carry the stiffness of a finished arch wire.
Blue Elgiloy vs stainless steel vs TMA
| Property | Blue Elgiloy (Co-Cr-Ni) | Stainless steel | TMA (Ti-Mo) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Formability | Highest of the three — softest temper, least springback while bending | Moderate; work-hardens as it is bent | High |
| Stiffness after heat treatment | High — soft to form, rigid in service | High, fixed | Low — roughly half the stiffness of steel |
| Soldering / welding | Easy at low heat, joint stays sound | Easy | Difficult; joints are weak |
| Springback | High | Moderate | High |
| Best for | Lab-formed arches, retainers, removable appliances, heavy finishing arches | Routine archwire, low cost, general use | Light continuous force, large deflections |
In one sentence: stainless is the workhorse, TMA is the soft spring, and Blue Elgiloy is the wire you can still shape by hand when the case stops being average.
Why orthodontists and labs buy this wire from Orthdent
- One factory for the whole range. Super elastic NiTi, heat-activated NiTi, reverse-curve NiTi, white-coated NiTi, CuNiTi, TMA, stainless steel, Blue Elgiloy, lingual retainer wire and straight or roll wire — all produced on our own arch wire lines, so the Blue you reorder behaves like the Blue you last received.
- Dimensional accuracy you can measure. Cross-section and straightness are held to a tolerance that lets the wire seat in the bracket slot and slide, instead of binding on a high corner.
- Bright mirror polish. A smooth surface means lower friction in sliding mechanics, less plaque retention, and a clean surface for soldering.
- Bench data on par with the major brands. Our test values sit alongside US, Brazilian and European arch wire brands — at a materially lower price.
- We answer for every pack. Own factory, dedicated arch wire production, and support on every order we ship.

FAQ
Q: What is Blue Elgiloy wire made of?
A: A cobalt-chromium-nickel alloy — roughly 40% cobalt, 20% chromium and 15% nickel, with molybdenum, iron and manganese. “Blue” is the softest of the four tempers the alloy is drawn in, not a coating or a colour on the metal.
Q: What is the difference between Blue, Yellow, Green and Red Elgiloy?
A: Only the temper. Blue is softest and most formable, Yellow and Green are progressively harder with more springback, and Red is the hardest. Blue is the one to choose when the wire has to be bent into shape by hand and soldered or welded afterwards.
Q: How long is one straight length?
A: 356 mm, which is 14 inches — the standard straight-length format for laboratory and chairside use.
Q: How many pieces come in a tube?
A: Ten straight lengths per rigid tube.
Q: Do I need to order upper and lower separately?
A: No. A straight length has no arch form built in, so one section serves both arches — you bend the upper or the lower from the same stick. That is why this listing has seven SKUs and not fourteen.
Q: Can Blue Elgiloy be soldered or spot-welded?
A: Yes, and it is the easiest of the four tempers to join. Use low heat and keep the joint short; the wire around a joint work-hardens, so avoid repeated re-heating in the same spot.
Q: Is cobalt-chromium stronger than stainless steel?
A: After heat treatment a Blue Co-Cr-Ni wire is stiffer and holds more springback than stainless steel of the same section, while being much easier to form before treatment. That is the reason it is used for lab-built appliances and heavy finishing arches rather than as a routine wire.
Q: Is this the same alloy as branded Elgiloy wire?
A: It is the same alloy family — Co-Cr-Ni, Elgiloy type — supplied by Orthdent in Blue temper. Elgiloy itself is a trademark of Elgiloy Specialty Metals; we describe our product by alloy type rather than by that brand.
Q: Can I get other sections or my own packaging?
A: Yes. Other rectangular and round sections, other lengths and private-label packaging are available as OEM/ODM. Contact us with the specification.
